Buwaray Raykurayku Gälpu Dhäruk
Also known as the Gälpu Word Book, this Shepherdson College, Literature Production Centre publication represents almost three decades in the making, instigated largely through the pioneering work of the book's primary author, the late Ganyinurru Gurruwiwi (1952-2002). Since her passing the book's progress was overseen by members of Ganyinurru's family working alongside staff from Shepherdson College (Galiwin'ku / Elcho Island) and linguist Dr Melanie Wilkinson. As a word book, the publication was initially modelled on children's picture dictionaries and a Gälpu-English word list however it is a Gälpu-focused book (generally avoiding English translation) which differs from conventional dictionaries because the text to explain each entry draws on everyday Yolŋgu conversation. Containing over 1700 entries arranged according to the 31-letter Yolŋgu alphabet, each entry is accompanied by an illustration. Gälpu is one of the dua moiety clans of the broader Dhaŋu language group in north-east Arnhem Land.
