The ‘Cross-cultural guide to some animals and plants of South East Arnhem Land’, book was made through a five-year collaboration with over 46 people including south east Arnhem Land knowledge holders, the Yugul Mangi Rangers, Ngukurr Yangbala (Youth) Project, Ngukurr Language Centre and staff from Macquarie University. Cross-cultural species names and knowledge (Indigenous and Western science) are presented in 10 languages including Kriol, seven traditional languages that are considered threatened (Marra, Ngandi, Ngalakgan, Wubuy, Rembarrnga, Rithharngu/Wagilak and Alawa) and English common and Latin scientific names. This cross-cultural field guide was developed for on-Country cross-cultural biodiversity surveys that aim to build and maintain knowledge of fauna and flora of south east Arnhem Land that have scientific and cultural significance. It will be of broader interest to those interested in cross-cultural approaches to science and land management, and conservation of species and cultures.
