Antarrengeny Awely: Alyawarr women’s songs from Antarrengeny
The Antarrengeny song series from the Utopia region of central Australia is one of the most well- known women’s ceremonies. In this book, senior Antarrengeny custodians explain the meanings and significance of 57 of their songs and we see how art, dance and song are intertwined in Aboriginal performance. The songs tell the stories of both everyday and important events: the travels of ancestral women across Antarrengeny country; the plants and animals of the area; and the impact of a land claim hearing.
The book and accompanying DVD feature the following Antarrengeny performers and custodians: Mary Kemarr Morton, Kathleen Kemarr Morton, Queenie Kemarr Lion, Lena Pwerl, Lena Ngal Skinner, Rosie Kngwarray Kunoth, Jeanie Pwerl Mills, Kathleen Kemarr Purvis, Lucky Kngwarray Morton, Audrey Kngwarray Morton, Sarah Kngwarray Morton, Lily Kngwarray Lion, Dorothy Kemarr Kunoth, Pansy Petyarr MacLeod, Rosie Pwerl, Amelia Kemarr, Nora Kemarr Moore, Polly Ngal and Albert Kemarr Bailey.
The book includes the words associated with each song in both Alyawarr and English, as well as the songs’ rhythmic patterns and a vocabulary list that demonstrates the poetic nature of the texts. Recent and archival photos and sound recordings, interwoven with contemporary recordings, provide a rich history to the songs. The book comes with an audio CD and a DVD.
