Ngulajuku! Tiger’s story of how Nyirrpi came to be

This wonderfully illustrated book in Warlpiri and English is based on an interview with the late Tiger Japaljarri Morris, an interview initially conducted by Fiona Napaljarri Gibson in 2001 as part of a Warlpiri research project consulting elders and community members about their thoughts on language and education. Some 20-odd years later the humour and wisdom of Tiger’s insights are brought to life through the work of Fiona Gibson and Angela Harrison for the Institute’s Centre for Aboriginal Languages and Linguistics (CALL). “This book does not attempt to be a life story”, writes Harrison, “or even a memoir, but a window into some of the significant events in one Warlpiri man’s life in the 20th century.” One of these key events is the making of the road from near Yuendumu to the outstation of Nyirrpi by Tiger and fellow Warlpiri men and women. The book is complemented by archival and community photographs, artwork images, timelines, maps and illustrations including by students from Nyirrpi Middle Years class. A free companion digital Study Guide produced by ATOM (Australian Teachers of Media) is available via: Ngulajuku! (ATOM Study Guide) – The Education Shop  This guide, written by Thomas Redwood with assistance from Angela Harrison, expands on the book’s links within the Australian Curriculum, namely in the areas of history, geography and humanities / social sciences.
